Castle Hocheppan

Built on a steep rock wall high above Missian

History: built in the 12th century, it was added to in 1200 and 1500. After the Counts of Eppan, the Counts of Tyrol took over this magnificent castle. Since 1911 it has been in the hands of the Count von Enzenberg zu Terlan-Liebeneich, but is not inhabited by the family. Architectural style: Count Ulrich von Eppan wanted his castle to impress, and it certainly does. There are elements of the Middle Ages, late Gothic, and Romantic eras. From 1964-1967 the local government office for the preservation of historical monuments renovated the newer parts that were in a bad condition. Peculiarities: the five sided and particularly high keep, the only one of its kind in Tyrol, as well as the chapel with its frescoes, which date from the time, it was built. Study the well kept Roman frescoes that show typical motives of this area (dumplings, sausages etc). Walking: You wanted to ask if you can visit these wonders of times long gone? Naturally you can discover the sights mentioned above and many more. Burg Hocheppan is open from Easter to All Saint’s Day from 10 am to 6 pm, closed on Wednesdays. Many of the listed walks end at the castle, such as the “Burgenwanderung”.
